What our Panel said about My Health Record.... January 2017

This month, responses showed that while the majority of our Panel members required some access to urgent medical care in December, 75% of respondents sought initial care from their local doctor as opposed to a hospital emergency department.

An overwhelming majority also thought it would be beneficial for a doctor to have online access to their current health information when travelling away from home. Despite this, only 57% of Panel members have signed up for a My Health Record.

There are many benefits of having a My Health Record:

  1. your important healthcare information will be available in one place online that is easily accessible by your authorised doctors, specialists, or hospitals
  2. in a medical emergency, healthcare providers connected to the My Health Record system can see your health information to provide you the best possible care quickly
  3. you won’t need to worry about having to remember and repeat your health history like medicines, details of chronic conditions, and dates of recent tests with different or new healthcare providers
  4. if you choose to you can control who sees what information in your My Health Record
  5. your privacy will be respected.

Of the 57% of people who have signed up for a My Health Record, 67% of those registered via ‘self-registration’, while 33% selected ‘other’. Interestingly, there are more than 90,300 consumers who have registered for My Health Record within South Eastern NSW.
