Work health and safety

As a small business, your practice is responsible for the health and safety of your employees, visitors and contractors. Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws provide greater consistency, certainty and clarity across Australia making it easier to understand your workplace health and safety duties.

Work Health and Safety in general practice is an essential component to providing a safe environment for both your patients and staff. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for General Practice (5th edition) sets out Work Health and Safety obligations for general practice.

In addition to these Standards, the RACGP has released General practice - A safe place guide to help your practice team proactively prevent and manage the risk and incidence of patient-initiated violence.

Your practice must also display an ‘If you get injured at work poster’ which summarises the requirements of the Workplace Injury Management and Workers Compensation Act 1998. It is available for download and order on the SafeWork NSW website. SafeWork NSW also provides free assistance and support services to help you maintain a safe workplace and meet health and safety responsibilities.
