This month, COORDINARE revisited the topic of My Health Record and asked people in South Eastern NSW whether they plan to opt out of the system.
More than half of the Consumer Health Panel participants (58%) were aware that a My Health Record will be created for them by the end of 2018, unless they choose to opt out.
It’s encouraging to see that 31% of participants had spoken to their doctor about the benefits of My Health Record. In most cases, it was the doctor who initiated the discussion. More than half of the survey participants (56%) indicated that they would like their doctor or pharmacist to use My Health Record.
The majority of people (84%) had not attended any events relating to My Health Record. Of those who did, 100% found it helpful! When we asked the Panel where they had come across information about My Health Record, the most popular platforms were:

Encouragingly, 2 out of 5 people indicated that they already have a My Health Record and/or don’t plan to opt out.
However, 1 in 5 people said that they have already opted out. Of those who opted out, 80% of people did so via the My Health Record website. The most common reasons for opting out related to perceived concerns about data security and privacy.
Of those people who do have a My Health Record, more than half (56%) have logged in through MyGov. 19% of people haven’t logged in but are happy for their healthcare providers to do so.
COORDINARE would like to thank all of our Consumer Health Panel participants for sharing questions and concerns about My Health Record. One panel member said: “It’s good to know that my records can be accessed by any health provider regardless of where I am in Australia. Also that I can access it myself.”
My Health Record security and privacy is protected by strict laws and penalties to prevent unauthorised access. Only registered healthcare provider organisations (e.g. general practices, pharmacies, hospitals) involved in your care, who are registered with the My Health Record System Operator, are allowed by law to access your My Health Record.
You can also allow others to view your record - such as a partner, child, parent or carer - by making them an authorised representative, or a nominated representative.
All documents in My Health Record are set to general access for healthcare providers by default. This means any providers who are involved in your care can see this information, but you can set privacy and security controls at any time. You can set up a record access code to give access to selected healthcare organisations or control access to specific document to limit who can view them.
Within your My Health Record, you can also see who has accessed your record and set up SMS or email notifications to see when it is accessed.
It's okay to change your mind! If you already have a My Health Record, and decide you don’t want one anymore, you can cancel it at any time by following these instructions. Alternatively, you can re-register for My Health Record at any time by following these steps.
