My Health Record

My Health Record is an online summary of your key health information. You control what goes into your record and who is allowed to access it.

Having a My Health Record means your important health information including allergies, current conditions and treatments, medicine details, pathology reports or diagnostic imaging scan reports can be digitally stored in one place. 

Healthcare providers like doctors, specialists and hospital staff can see it online from anywhere at any time when they need to, like in an accident or emergency, or if you are travelling and need to see a doctor out of your region.

Healthcare providers can add clinical documents about your health to your record. This includes:

  • an overview of your health uploaded by your regular doctor, called a Shared Health Summary (this is a useful reference for new doctors or other healthcare provider you visit)
  • hospital discharge summaries
  • reports from tests and scans
  • medications that your doctor has prescribed you
  • referral letters from your doctors.

Up to two years of past Medicare data may be added to your record, including your organ donation decisions and immunisations. You can also share additional information in your record such as emergency contact details or your advance care plan. Find out more here.

Strict rules and regulations on who can see or use your My Health Record protect your health information from misuse or loss. The Australian Parliament also passed new laws to strengthen the privacy and security protections within My Health Record. The new legislation means that you can opt in or opt out of My Health Record at any time, and permanently delete your record.
