Background

It was a particularly bad year for the flu season during 2017, with over 100,000 flu notifications recorded in NSW. For people who suffer from chronic conditions, contracting the flu can cause a deterioration of their condition and raise the risk of them being hospitalised.

Throughout 2018, consultation was undertaken with general practice staff and both Local Health Districts across the COORDINARE catchment. This feedback helped us understand what general practice support might be required to enhance management of those patients most at risk during the flu season. Our approach is to support general practices with these patients as well as reducing their likelihood of hospitalisation during the winter months.
