General practice-led approach to community connection launched in mental health month
1 October 2026
This October in mental health month we're highlighting how the theme 'a little connection goes a long way' in supporting mental wellbeing, is demonstrated by a local general practice-led initiative, along with COORDINARE’s commissioned mental health services.
In the northern Illawarra, a general practice based in Helensburgh, is leading a community based mental health initiative that aims to improve non-clinical mental health support through community connection, belonging and participation.
General practitioner Dr Trevor Kemper, owner of Equilibrium Healthcare, said in response to findings from a survey of 300 local residents, the practice has developed 'Seek. Connect. Move', a community health campaign that aims to strengthen community connection, improve awareness of local supports, and create additional pathways into primary care and mental health services.
"The broader vision is to make existing opportunities easier to find and join, while supporting the community to identify and address gaps where they exist.
"Our 2025 survey highlighted loneliness, social isolation, delayed help-seeking, uncertainty about where to find support along with the importance of social connection and movement in mental wellbeing. It also identified opportunities to better engage LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent and younger community members,” said Dr Kemper.
As well as a community awareness and social media campaign, Equilibrium Healthcare plans to deliver staff education and local business engagement activities promoting early intervention, connection, and movement for mental health. A complementary community developed website is also being launched to help residents more easily discover, access, and participate in community groups, activities and supports.
COORDINARE's CEO Prudence Buist said COORDINARE is delighted to support Equilibrium Healthcare's initiative and anticipates the findings could inform future place-based models across South Eastern NSW.
"This initiative provides an opportunity to test how community led approaches can complement traditional mental health services, particularly in communities with limited formal support options," said Ms Buist.
As well as supporting initiatives like Seek, Connect Move, COORDINARE commissions partners to deliver health-promoting and preventative mental health services, support GP capability, and provide care for people living with mental health issues.
