peers

Jo Kain

Jo’s work in the mental health and suicide prevention sector is shaped by her own experiences of suicide and recovery. Her connection to peer work began as a Peer Worker in a Suicide Aftercare program, where she experienced firsthand the power of lived experience, hope and connection.

Jo has worked as a Peer Worker, Peer Work Coordinator, trainer and assessor for emerging and experienced peers, and team-leader of a peer-led suicide prevention program. She is passionate about strengthening the peer workforce and creating and participating in opportunities for lived experience voices to influence services, systems and communities.

Jo is deeply connected to the values of peer work, the role of peer mentorship in supporting growth, and the importance of the consumer movement in shaping peer work as a distinct discipline. Through this vodcast, she hopes listeners gain a deeper appreciation of peer work and how organisations can support peer workers to thrive.
