Call to strengthen primary health disaster resilience
12 October 2026
This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, 13 October, COORDINARE - South Eastern NSW PHN is highlighting the vital role of primary health care in strengthening disaster resilience for communities and reminding general practices in South Eastern NSW of opportunities to strengthen their disaster preparedness.
COORDINARE - South Eastern NSW CEO Prudence Buist said partnerships play a critical role in ensuring communities receive timely, coordinated support before, during and after disaster events.
“We are working to strengthen relationships across PHNs, government agencies and community organisations as well as supporting local general practices to be prepared,” said Ms Buist.
“Our annual survey helps identify where practices may need additional resources, training, tools or support. For example, general practices in South Eastern NSW have an opportunity to participate in an online emergency management desktop exercise on 13 October at 5.30pm. "
Health professionals and practice staff can also join COORDINARE's disaster response register to be contacted to assist if an emergency affects their local area.
"Your availability would be confirmed at the time, registering your interest in the disaster register doesn't mean you are obligated to assist," added Ms Buist.
The value of preparedness, partnership and community resilience in reducing the impacts of future disasters was the focus of a Disaster Management Network Forum held last month.
"This inaugural forum for Primary Health Networks in NSW and ACT highlighted the role of primary health in helping communities reduce disaster risk and prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.
“The forum offered valuable insights into the long-term impacts of emergencies on individuals and communities, reinforcing the importance of locally informed, people-centred approaches to disaster planning and response,” said Ms Buist.
