Brian Dowd, a proud Gamilaraay man, says the Walkabout Barber and Walkabout Beautiful mobile service and trauma and recovery service, which is fitted out as a mobile salon offering professional barber, hairdressing and beauty appointments, works as a perfect setting for people to open up about their mental health. 

Medibank Chief Customer Officer Milosh Milisavljevic said the convoy supports Medibank’s focus on prevention and early intervention.  

“Access to healthcare can be challenging for people living outside major metropolitan areas and good health shouldn’t depend on your postcode,” he said.  

“By joining the Health Check Convoy, we’re bringing our Live Better van directly to communities in Southern NSW and making it easier for people to connect with support that can help them stay well.  

“Our vans are designed to spark conversations about health and empower people with practical tools and knowledge. Being part of the convoy allows us to extend that impact even further, alongside other health organisations committed to improving community wellbeing.” 

Southern NSW Local Health District CE, Margaret Bennett, said some health conditions can develop quietly with no symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular health checks and preventive care are so important.  

“Our health promotion team can help people visiting the convoy to access the programs available locally. We are delighted to be a partner in this initiative to promote wellbeing in our region," said Ms Bennett. 

Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health & Community Services is proud to work alongside COORDINARE and other partners, to deliver culturally appropriate, community-focused care and to support people to make informed decisions about their health. 

"Through our mobile dental clinic, we’ll be offering basic dental screenings, preventative oral health education, dental care products and referrals to help people take positive steps towards better oral health," said Katungul’s CEO, David MacQueen. 

"We know that access can be a barrier for many people, particularly in regional and remote communities, so taking services to where people are makes it easier for individuals and families to get the information and support they need. 

"Our team will also provide health promotion, vaccination education, health checks, screening and intake support, service navigation and brief interventions from our outreach health van. These services help connect people with the right care at the right time and encourage early action to improve health and wellbeing,” added Mr MacQueen. 

Directions Health’s Executive Director NSW, Nikki Jordan, said their involvement in the convoy is about ensuring that regardless of location, people can access the right care, at the right time, in a way that feels accessible, connected and person‑centred. 

“The ROB (Rural Outreach Bus), funded by NSW Health, strengthens our inclusive and connected approach to service delivery, bringing integrated health and wellbeing support directly into communities that often face the greatest barriers to care. By meeting people where they are, it creates a welcoming, low‑barrier entry point to support, strengthens local partnerships, and enables earlier engagement for those who might otherwise miss out,” said Ms Jordan. 

All services are free and available daily from 10am to 3pm. Walk-ins are welcome, and free refreshments will be provided.
