World Family Doctor Day acknowledges important role of 800 local GPs

18 May 2026

COORDINARE’s Chief Executive Officer Prudence Buist said this year's World Family Doctor Day theme Compassionate Care in a Digital World celebrates GPs bringing their values of compassion, continuity and person-centred care into the digital age.

Many GPs in South Eastern NSW have adopted digital health technologies and practices such as e-prescribing, virtual health consulting and digital AI-scribes into their workflows to provide a wider range of services to their patients. In addition, digital connectivity to platforms such as My Health Record and the National Cancer Screening Register can improve access to patient information. However, while digital innovation brings clear benefits, we must ensure it is implemented thoughtfully to reduce rather than widen health inequities,” she said.

COORDINARE’s digital health team supports local general practices to make meaningful use of digital health options and adopt new technologies that can reduce administrative burden, support clinical judgement and protect time for listening, thinking and building trust. Through our Digital Health Maturity Assessment, we are working with General Practices to understand what Digital Health platforms are currently being utilised and focusing on embedding digital health into usual care practices to overcome barriers, so the digital divide does not disadvantage those with limited access to technology.

Ms Buist added, “When tools are designed around the real needs of patients and GPs, they enhance care rather than complicate it. It is important that any digital or AI system used in primary care is reliable, transparent about its limits, and backed by real-world evidence. Safe implementation in practice requires clear accountability, robust privacy protections, and consideration regarding equitable access to avoid widening existing inequities.
